How to Squat
The squat is one of the fundamental exercises every girl should have nailed. Want more power in your sprints? Stronger legs? Or a perkier butt? The squat is your new best friend. Learn how to squat with this step-by-step guide for girls.
How to Squat:
1. Stand with your feet at just outside hip-width apart and turn your feet outwards slightly
2. Keeping your back strong and your chest high, move your hips back and down
3. As you move down, keep the weight on your heels and don’t let your knees track over your toes
4. Stop when your hip crease is aligned with your knees, then stand back up again
Top tip: As you learn how to squat, remember to keep your chest high, your weight on your heels and don’t let your knees cave in. Nail this now and you’ll be set to add load to the movement in no time.
The benefits of a squat
A squat is a compound movement, that means it works several muscle groups at once. We’re talking quads, glutes, and your core. These muscles are all working hard for every squat you do.
What’s more, because these muscles are all working together in unison, you’re improving your body’s ability to communicate and work together.
So if you’re looking to improve your all-round lower body strength, or want to firm up your legs, then a squat should definitely have a place in your workout routine. Whether you’re a powerlifter, a bodybuilder or simply looking to boost your fitness, mastering the squat is a must.
Once you know how to squat, the next step is adding load to the movement. Check out our to guide to the front squat and the back squat to start loading up that bar.
